Our bodies are covered with hair! There is hair under our armpits, hair on our arms and leg, pubic hair! Humans are hairy freaks lol. With all the hair found on our bodies I find the hair on our heads the most fascinating. There is such a wide range with different textures, colors and types. Also the many styles we can pull off and look fabulous doing. I just love the beauty and versatility of the hair on our heads!
Recently all my friends have been on the natural hair journey. They have been doing the big chop and are taking monthly photos of their new hair growth. It makes me happy to see my friends really embracing their natural hair and seeing the different hair textures of each of my friends. I have a strong appreciation for all the black girls on this journey. When I see the hair time and maintenance that goes into caring for a black person’s natural hair I am really proud of my friends. Of course I will not leave out my beauties that wear hair extension or wigs. You bought it so you flaunt it! Plus wigs, braids and sew-in extensions are a healthy protective style especially for an individual with an hectic schedule.
Personally, I refuse to revert back to natural hair. My head is TOO BIG and I have zero patience. I had such a thick head of hair as a child, I just don’t want to go back to that life.
This excess hair was not a choice! I cried every time my hair was being combed.
I rarely wear extensions. I like to have hand-to-scalp contact. After 3weeks with a sew-in I am itching to have it removed. So what am I left to do with my hair…I relax it! I know a lot of people are high strung about the use of hair cream to permanently straighten one’s natural hair structure and the effects of this chemical on the scalp. But let me tell you! For a person like myself that is too lazy to do their hair. A box of hair relaxer is like a blessing from the heavens.
With relaxed hair I do have my own personal hair journey that I want to share with you all☺️. Having my hair permanently straightened, I must have thought I was void of hair damage because I had severely botched my hair! The amount of damage my hair had undergone it was in need of life support. I was always bleaching and coloring my hair. Almost every two months I was dying my hair a new color. This extensive hair coloring made my hair thin and lifeless. My hair had zero shine. There was heat damage and a lot of split ends. I would clip my hair ends, trying to get rid of the dead ends but my hair was already fucked up. Last winter, around this time, I bought over the counter dye and did that ombre style. Bad decision on my part because the cold air was not helping. My hair needed to be constantly moisturized and it was not keeping the moisture. So my hair kept breaking. I decided that I would just go to the hairdresser and cut my hair short. As my punishment for botching up my hair, I apparently was cursed to find an hairdresser that could not cut hair AT ALL! She cut my hair with zero layers, like she just took the scissors and went in a circle. I looked like Rock lee from Naruto. I wanted my hair in a short bob and that’s not what I received. (I am sorry I have no photos to share from that time period). My hair was in this awkward phase that it was too short to be placed in a ponytail and too long to do short hairstyles. For 2 month I rocked this hair but I realized my hair wasnt growing. I thought I was going through that stunted hair growth phase. So I found myself a new hairdresser and she is a GOD SENT!
I started going to my hairdresser Kim in April 2015 and she performed a miracle on my hair. She brought my ish back to health and life! To see my hair regain volume and length, motivated me to take care of my hair. I always had shoulder length hair, my hair has never extended into my back. But with this hair care process I’ve gained new inches!
WHAT DID I DO ON THIS HAIR-CARE JOURNEY?
I maintained my regular wash hair routine. I used Olive Oil Conditioner, Shampoo and Moisturizer. Washed my hair every week or 2weeks. (Depending on how oily my hair feels, I hate when my hair has too much oil and grease). With every wash I use CLEAR scalp and hair moisturizer for scalp treatment. This maintains moisture and shine with my hair. When my hair gets dry I use a little argon oil, which is perfect because its not heavy and my hair receives that shine to stay fresh.
- For the first three month with Kim, I was taking Biotin supplements. This helped significantly with the hair growth. I had new hair growth like crazy. The downfall to using the Biotin was that my nails got very brittle. They broke so easy so I stopped talking the Biotin.
- With the help of the Biotin and Kim, in 5 months my hair was back to shoulder length but was still very thin. So I started doing a deep treatment with my hair. I used Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. I feel this product helped a lot with bringing volume back into my hair.
- In the summer I also changed my diet which could have an impact on my hair growth. I removed artificial drinks and sodas from my diet. Juiced almost every morning and consumed more water.
- With each month, I could see more results in my hair and this is the end result!
Healthy and beautiful hair !
